The Mystery Door Episode 2
It's moved.

Or it's back. Or it was never gone and I simply couldn't see it in daylight — I've turned every explanation over in my head and none of them sit right.

I went looking for it again, half-convinced I'd imagined the whole thing. I hadn't. Different spot this time — further along, closer to the water. Same door. Same gap of warm light leaking out into the dark.

But this time there was something on the step.

A lantern. Unlit, plain, nothing remarkable about it except that it hadn't been there before, and I hadn't left it, and there's no one else who walks this far into the trees.

I crouched down. I didn't touch it.

I keep telling myself there's a simple explanation — that someone's playing a trick, that I'm tired, that the mind does strange things when it's alone with the dark for too long. But I've stopped believing my own excuses.

Someone put that lantern there. Or something did. And whatever it was wanted me to find it.
